December/January 2022/2023

It’s only natural as you reach the start of a new year to reflect on all that’s happened during the previous one as well as what’s to come. For me, the highlight of 2022 was CWM senior editor Melissa’s nuptials. Celebrating that amazing wedding day really brought home to me how far we’ve come this year from the dark days of 2020 and 2021 with its lockdowns and restrictions. It felt like the normality we’d been praying for, when many of us had been left plagued with doubt over whether our wonderful world of weddings would ever be back in quite the same way. There was also the usual flurry of celebrity weddings in 2022, leading the way as ever with trends we expect to see featuring in your weddings very soon, notably on the veil front. There was Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck with the bride dressed in that oh-so elegant Ralph Lauren turtle-neck column ceremony dress and a sleek silhouette with removable veil hood for the evening. Personally, I’m hoping we see more bridal hoods on wedding dresses next year, following on from the amazing capes that made inroads in 2022. Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian made pairing a short dress with a long veil a thing when she married Travis Barker. The showstopping cathedral-length veil was personalised with hand-embroidered flowers and a large image of the Virgin Mary inspired by her new husband’s tattoo.

In September, when we sadly lost Her Majesty the Queen and TV channels were airing wall-to-wall documentaries looking back over her incredible life and service, we were reminded of her wedding day in 1947, when she was still Princess Elizabeth. Seeing these images brought me back full circle. Sure, J-Lo’s veil was new and edgy, Kourtney K’s was modern and oh-so personal, but looking at these 70-something-year-old images of our beloved Queen made me realise: Her Majesty did it best! Her breathtaking 13-foot tulle veil attached at the shoulders was symbolic of rebirth and growth after the Second World War and was said to be inspired by Botticelli’s painting of Primavera.

So, enough musings from me! I hope you enjoy this issue where the region’s cake makers aim to inspire with a display of their most showstopping bakes. Plus, head over to our flower feature to find out everything you wanted to know about wedding florals but were afraid to ask.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Berwick Lodge

Berwick Lodge is an imposing red-brick Victorian manor house. Its interior has everything you’d expect from a building of its type, such as open fires and wood panelling, yet with an East meets West twist. Sumptuous over-sized sofas and crystal chandeliers bring a luxurious feel to the place while retaining its relaxed and welcoming ambience A sweeping staircase leads to 14 beautiful bedrooms, all individually designed and named after ancient civilizations in the Anatolian period.

Set in 18 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland with views reaching as far as Wales, the venue features a walkway to Aphrodite’s Dome (the marble pergola), ornate fountains, an orchard and summer house, making it a wonderful backdrop.

Summeria is a light room upstairs in the converted stable block, the Mews, with skylights and views of the countryside. An original stained-glass doorway leads you to this room in the eaves that holds up to 50 nearest and dearest for your civil ceremony. Mesopotamia, also in the Mews, hosts ceremonies witnessed by up to 90 loved ones. This ground-floor room boasts large windows, pillars to decorate and access to a patio area with views of the woodland and countryside beyond.

The dining room, known as Hattusa, can host wedding breakfasts for 20 to 90 guests and up to 150 for an evening reception. The architectural style and crystal chandeliers create a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. What’s more, elopement weddings for just the two of you are hosted in the pretty little summer house in the gardens.

Fragrance hacks to make your scent last longer

As we all start clutching our pennies a little bit tighter, we're asking the experts for some tricks to make a beauty product last for longer. No more splashing on our perfume with 1,000 spritz a day, Fragrance Expert and Head of Marketing at The Fragrance Shop, Iember Gordon reveals how we can make a couple spritzes last all day, and our perfumes have a longer lifespan. 1. Apply perfume right after your shower "The best time to spray perfume on your skin is right after your shower. This is because moisture gives your scent something to hold on to, so spraying your signature scent on after your skin has been freshly washed boosts its staying power."
