April/May 2021

Does anyone else feel like they’ve been on a rollercoaster ride during the pandemic? From lockdowns and restrictions to WFH and Zoom calls – these are all things we have learned to adapt to. Throw wedding planning into the mix, and it’s incredible that we’ve made it through!

What has been a silver lining for me in these utterly bonkers times is seeing how the Bristol and Somerset wedding industry has taken everything the pandemic has thrown at it in its stride. Tales of companies diversifying, volunteering and sending homemade presents to their couples have put such a smile on my face and make me proud to support our local wedding superstars. If you want to sing from the rooftops about how wonderful your big-day suppliers have been throughout date changes, postponements and last-minute micro-weddings, then we’d love to hear from you.

In this issue, we aim to help you get that to-do list ticked off, with top tips from local experts in our Planning SOS feature (page 61), our round-up of the best wedding venues with outdoor spaces (page 17) and some serious gown inspiration (page 67) courtesy of our fashion editor, Claire Ridley.

Enjoy!

The Barn at Cott Farm

With stunning views across the Somerset countryside, The Barn at Cott Farm is nestled in informal grounds that are teeming with cottage-garden blooms in the warmer months. There’s a large lawn for outdoor games, and over a small footbridge is the venue’s camping field. The fire pit and wood-fired pizza oven keep the chill at bay in the evening.

The welcoming barn combines rustic charm with style and comfort. The original doors open to reveal modern tri-folding glass doors, making the entrance flexible in all weathers. The wooden beams are strewn with fairylights, and the coir carpet, handmade wooden furniture and apple-crate bar offer a blank canvas for couples. Windows and skylights flood the space with sunshine during the day, while soft lighting provides a cosy ambience at night.

Couples wishing to take their vows in the great outdoors can do so in front of a congregation of up to 150 under the majestic wooden pergola. For indoor ceremonies, the barn also holds up to 150 loved ones. In the evening, couples can invite up to 300 of their nearest and dearest to enjoy the whole building and grounds, complete with its large, canopied outdoor area.

Venue hire includes exclusive use from the day before the wedding, making setting up a breeze. Packages include bespoke menus – from sharing platters to traditional three-course meals.

The 1st May sees Jo Malone London launch its latest limited edition collection. Inspired by nostalgic scenes and marmalade dreams The Marmalade Collection features five charming new fragrances - Tangy Rhubarb, Rose Blush, Orange Peel, Elderflower Cordial, and Blackberry & Bay. Retreat to the city at The Marylebone, London

As the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel's super-trendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the part-pedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you're just a short walk from London's most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair.
