Tell us about your company...
We at The Boho Bakery focus on two things: baking good cakes and making them look beautiful. Our lovely bakers specialise in recipe development and working with each couple to create cakes and cake tables entirely unique to them. I think what makes us a little unusual is that we work with real flowers, the live kind, created by Mother Nature herself. This means that no two cakes are ever the same, each one is seasonal with each and every one fitting perfectly in to the overall theme of the day as we work directly with florists to ensure continuity between all things floral and cake.
What's your background and why did you launch your business?
The Boho Bakery was founded by me, Pennie. I started my career as a secondary school teacher (teaching philosophy and ethics of all things), then retrained as a pilates instructor. It was while I was establishing my pilates classes up in Glasgow that I got a part-time job as a baking apprentice and things really went from there. I moved back down south in 2016 and decided that the time had come to go it alone - The Boho Bakery was born!
Since then we have been on such an exciting journey. We've catered at festivals, toured the Alps while catering for the Bristol-based production company Okoru, and have now settled in our canalside bakery, in partnership with Kitsch Coffee & Wine Bar. Throughout it all though, we have continued to create our wedding cakes and cake tables - it's definitely a baker's favourite thing to do!
As a business we are now able to offer training programs for young people who are going through hard times. These young people work in our kitchen, so although they don't (yet) work directly on our wedding cakes, every cake that is bought contributes towards creating them a brighter future.
What's your favourite type of wedding to work on?
Every wedding - we just love it! From the initial enquiry, right through the consultation process, the bake and then the set up - it's always such a pleasure to work with people and be a part of their big day. If we had to choose a particular favourite though, we do love a wedding filled with flowers - the brighter the better!
What's your top tip for couples planning a wedding?
Remember that it's YOUR big day. Make decisions based on what you like, what you want and don't try to do too much yourselves - delegate to us, your lovely suppliers, it's what we do!
What's your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry?
Meeting people! Absolutely 100%, no questions asked, what other industry offers the chance to meet so many people planning such happy occasions?
What's the most common question couples ask you?
'What is your most popular flavour of cake' and we always answer the same - 1. Victoria Sponge. 2. Carrot. 3. Lemon. Fact.
