Last year, Hannah Faulder headed to Ted the Shepherd's Hut at Thrupe Marsh Farm for a back-to-nature romantic weekend away.

After a long, wet and windy journey we arrived at the site as the sun was setting and we immediately felt a sense of calm. The contrast between our busy lives at home and this peaceful corner of Somerset was obvious as we trudged down the little shingle path at the top of a field to our home for the next two nights. The site's other hut, Len, is just 150 metres away, although it could've been 150 miles as we felt completely secluded yet reassured we weren't completely cut off from civilisation.

Once inside we couldn't believe how cosy and practical the interior was, everything you could possibly need was in arm's reach and we were also greeted by delicious local produce. After a surprisingly good solar-powered shower we sat on the bed in our pyjamas and looked out the window with a glass of refreshing local cider and watched the last of the sun's rays go down over a very misty Glastonbury Tor.

The next morning we chatted with the lovely owner, Phil Russell. He couldn't have been more helpful providing hints and tips to get the most out of our stay and he even found out the name of the yellow paint used for the interior that I'd fallen in love with!

We decided to get out (relatively) early and explore the local towns of quirky Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet. Our final stop was the UK's smallest city, Wells, where we bought dinner supplies from the local artisan market.

Back at the hut I went in to full-on cavewoman mode, building log fires in the outdoor pizza oven and the huge imported Swedish hot tub. I soon got distracted and hubby took over and very proudly kept the flames burning to prepare our pizza and get the tub to the optimum temperature.

We very quickly settled in to total relaxation, with no television and no WiFi to distract us we sat with a glass of wine under the stars chatting, reconnecting and discussing how we couldn't think of a better place to come as a couple to unwind.

On our final morning we woke and prepared a rustic breakfast and took a quick walk to explore the scenery on our doorstep before heading for a sightseeing day in Bath just 18 miles down the road.

We were sad to leave our little country bolthole; even though we'd only been there two nights it truly felt like a home from home and we were left wishing we'd booked an extra night. With the little FM radio we didn't even miss the mains electric (although I did over-pack somewhat when I brought my hairdryer) and we even discussed whether we should perhaps get a hot tub in the back garden! It may have rained the whole time but in no way did that put a dampener on things, after all, what's a rural English weekend break without a bit of drizzle to add to the atmosphere?
