April/May 2022

Who else can’t believe it’s springtime already? It’s such a special time of year and in 2022 we all get to appreciate it so much more given the last two we’ve spent locked up! This issue we’ve got the usual blend of wedspiration from real weddings to expert advice and ideas including a look at some showstopping couple shots in our photography feature. We’ve also gathered together some of the region’s wise wedding suppliers who offer up their best tips for starting you out on your wedding planning journey.

In our own wedding world here at CMW towers, bride Melissa has been turning her attention to her best gals and we’ve now got our dresses, if not in our hands then on order. It was a bumpy ride, but thanks to Melissa’s unending patience, we got there. We’re now looking at the even more fun stuff such as accessories, shoes, hair and make-up, which has led myself, my fellow bridesmaids and the bride herself to ponder the matter of just whose job it is to foot the bill for the glam? This in no small part is due to the fact none of us seem able to get the lovely Melissa to take one single penny from us towards it. So, when Fragrance Direct told me they’d teamed up with wedding planner Hannah Rose to discuss just this matter, I was all ears!

Thinking about the glam bill, Fragrance Direct asked Hannah whether it was nearlyweds’ responsibility to pay for everyone or just themselves? She answered unequivocally, “Definitely everyone. If they’ve asked for people to be part of their day, the majority of the time this will fall to the couple to pay. Otherwise, their loved ones may be put off joining the wedding party. Some bridesmaids and groomsmen might be happy to contribute, but it’s always encouraged that the couple plan this into their budget and offer to pay for the basics such as hair and make-up if they want them to have it done. The cost will vary depending on the hair stylist and make-up artist, but I’d advise to allocate a minimum of £150-£200 per person for anyone who isn’t the bride or groom.” So, there we have it. We shall immediately cease arguing with the bride and accept her kindness gracefully.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Orchardleigh Estate

Orchardleigh is a family-owned country estate boasting a 19th-century stately home, romantic island church, 18-hole golf course and plenty of luxurious accommodation.

Set within 500 acres of private parkland and lakes, Orchardleigh House and its accompanying grounds will be exclusively yours for the duration of your wedding day. With expansive gardens and views across the estate and lake, the venue offers no shortage of stunning backdrops for those all-important photographs.

You have the choice of four locations for your vows. Inside there’s The Ballroom (up to 100 guests) and The Great Hall (up to 144 guests). Or outside there’s the option of the venue’s newest ceremony spot, The Belvedere (up to 144 guests) and The Pergola, which can host unlimited numbers.

Alternatively, St Mary’s island church at the heart of the estate, illuminated by candlelight, is an oh-so romantic place to say “I do.”

The Terrace and gardens offer a space for reception drinks with sweeping views across the estate. Ideal for winter wedding receptions, The Great Hall and vestibule have open fires, and the former also offers a great alternative for post-ceremony drinks if it’s too chilly outside. The Ballroom meanwhile, with capacity to seat up to 165 loved ones for the wedding breakfast and 200 for the evening, boasts high ceilings and feature windows and is an elegant space to host your celebrations.

The venue offers a three-day wedding package, which includes accommodation the night before for up to 18 guests, hire for the entire wedding day including all ceremony spaces, catering and beverages, plus a romantic stay at the Boathouse the night after the wedding.

One good turn: Meet charity baker Emma Whitehead

Wedding cake maker Emma Whitehead has an interesting and inspiring story to tell when it comes to the reason she set up her charitable business. "I started baking for charity in a more focused way in November 2016. I had a ballot place in the 2017 London Marathon and I wanted to raise money for five charities close to my heart and my husband's – Great Ormond Street Hospital, JDRF, Mariposa Trust, Miscarriage Association and Tommy's," she explains.
