Roman Baths & Pump Room

The breathtaking Grade I listed Pump Room is much as it was when first built; the spa water still flows from the fountain overlooking the natural hot spring and a crystal chandelier still sparkles from the centre of the room. Opened by the Duchess of York in 1795, Jane Austen observed people and fashions from within the room and it even features in her novel Northanger Abbey.

The exterior of the Roman Baths & Pump Room is a mixture of grand Georgian and Victorian architecture with the original Roman spa and religious complex at lower ground level.

For couples looking to tie the knot here, ceremonies take place in the Great Bath with up to 300 guests for a ceremony at 8.30am or 7.30pm – what could be more impressive than exchanging your vows amid the flickering torchlight and rising steam from the waters of the Great Bath? The Pump Room, which also hosts 300 loved ones, is ideal for an 8.30pm service and still has the power to impress: tall windows, Corinthian columns and a glittering crystal chandelier. There’s space for dining and the room has a stage for live music and a fine dancefloor.

Alternatively, couples can choose the Terrace and Reception Hall for up to 150 guests for a ceremony from 7.30pm. It’s more intimate with a very special view overlooking the waters of the Great Bath, a romantic choice for an evening dinner – the adjoining Reception Hall makes a fabulous area for dancing.

Lastly, the Kingston Room or Drawing Room seat up to 40 friends and family for a ceremony from 8am-6pm. These period rooms, overlooking Bath Abbey, cater for smaller ceremonies and receptions.
